Pycharm Community Install



PyCharm by JetBrains is one of the most popular Python IDE available. In order to use PyCharm Community Version on Windows, it is necessary to make sure that you have Python installed on your Windows device. There are 2 main versions of PyChram available.

I am new to PyCharm but I have used python before on terminal. I am trying to run some code but it says module not found. On terminal, I used to install the required modules using pip but if I do that now, the module is still not found in PyCharm.

Installation

PyCharm community edition on the other hand is free to use and can carry out all the tasks that is required in Automation Testing using Python and Selenium. Hence, in this case, we are just going to install the PyCharm Community Edition for Windows.

Steps to Install PyCharm Community Edition for Windows:

Downloading PyCharm Community Edition on Windows:

Go to the PyCharm website by clicking the link https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/

Now click on the “Download” button available in the middle of the website or available at the end of the right-hand side of the page. This opens the Download page. Alternatively, you can also visit the link: https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/download

Now click on the “Download” button available below the “Community” text. This will start downloading the “PyCharm community edition” software.

Installing PyCharm Community Edition on Windows:

After the download is finished, you need to run the application downloaded in order to install the application. As you run the PyCharm Community Edition software, PyCharm installation window appears as below.

Here, click on the “Next” button to go to the next window.

Here, you can choose the option to choose the destination folder where you wish to install PyCharm. This can be done by clicking on the “Browse” button. After you have chosen the destination folder, click on the “Next” button. This will open a new window.

In this window, you can choose various options like:

  • Create a Desktop Shortcut of 64-bit launcher or 32-bit launcher based on your system’s configuration
  • Update context menu of Add “Open Folder as Project”
  • Create .py associations
  • Update PATH variable to add launchers dir to the PATH

Finally click on the “Next” button.

Here you can choose the Start Menu Folder for the PyCharm Community Edition shortcuts. After choosing the Start Menu Folder click on the “Install” button.

Configuring PyCharm Community Edition on Windows:

Now your PyCharm Community Edition is installed on your Windows PC. Here, it is advised to click on the checkbox “Run PyCharm Community Edition” checkbox and then click on the “Finish” button. This will start your PyCharm for the first time and help you to set up PyCharm.

A new window appears that asks you whether you want to Import PyCharm settings or not. Based on your preference you can choose the option to either install PyCharm settings or not. Click “OK”.

Next you are provided with the option to choose a theme for your PyCharm. Based on your preference, you can choose the option to either choose the “Darcula” theme or the “Light” theme by clicking on their respective radio buttons.

In case you choose the option to click on the button “Next: Featured Plugins” you will be shown with a new window where you can choose the option to install different plugins available like IdeaVim, R, or AWS Toolkit.

Here, after you click on the button “Start Using PyCharm”, PyCharm starts where you can choose the option to create a new project, open an existing project or get the project from Version Control.

In case you choose the option “Skip Remaining and Set Defaults”, you are immediately taken to the option to create or open a PyCharm project.

Download

PyCharm support different platforms like Windows, MacOS, Linux etc. In this tutorial, we will download and install Windows. Following URL can be used to download PyCharm. Below there is two version Professional and Community.

In this case, we will download the Professional version where the installation is very same as the Community addition.

Install

We will install PyCharm in a Next->Next Windows-style installation. The download file is named as pycharm-professional-2019.1.exe. We will start with the following screen which is Welcome to PyCharm Setup.

Next, we can set the Destination Folder of the PyCharm. By default, PyCharm is installed to the C:Program FilesJetBrainsPyCharm 2019.1.

We will see the following screen which provides Installation Options.

  • 64-bit launcher will install a 64-bit launcher which can be used for 64 bit operating systems.
  • Add 'Open Folder as Project' will add PyCharm Open Folder as Project to the right-click menu which makes it easy to open a PyCharm Project folder easily from File Explorer.
  • .py will associate py extensions with the PyCharm IDE to open and edit.
  • Add launchers dir to PATH will set the PATH variable of the Windows to be run launchers from PowerShell or MS-DOS.

As the shortcut will be put to the Start Menu we will specify the name which is JetBrains by default.

The installation process will copy the libraries, data files, executables etc like below.

After completion of the PyCharm installation, we will see the following screen where we can run and start PyCharm with the Run PyCharm like below.

Uninstall or Remove PyCharm

PyCharm and Windows provide the uninstall function we will learn both of them.

Uninstall or Remove with PyCharm Installation File

We will click to the PyCharm installation file which will show the following screen.

We will see following screen where we will just click to the Next

We will see the following screen for Uninstall old versions. This will list currently installed versions. We need to check the versions we want to uninstall or remove. Optionally we can do not delete settings and configuration from old versions by click checkbox below.

When the removal of the PyCharm completed we will see the following screen which says Uninstallation Complete.

Uninstall or Remove From

From Windows Start by typing remove we will list Change or remove program where we will uninstall PyCharm.

From the opening Programs and Features screen, we will select JetBrains PyCharm and click Uninstall from above. We can also see information like version of the PyCharm and installation date.

Pycharm Community Install

This will open the following screen where we can set if we want to delete PyCharm caches and local history or settings and installed plugins. Then we can click Uninstall from the following screen.

When the installation is completed we will see the following screen.
